Who Owns The Media
Info
Who Owns the Media is an interactive platform that visualizes the entanglement of media ownership in Greece. The design and technology behind the project aimed to transform a complex system of relationships and interests into an accessible and dynamic user experience, while the website itself serves as a tool for journalistic research.
A key element of the project’s visual identity is typography, designed entirely from straight lines without curves. This geometric approach directly reflects the structure of the interactive network of interests, which maps out who controls the Greek media. The network, full of nodes and connections, illustrates the ties between major business groups and media outlets, while the typography visually reinforces this interdependence.
Another important design feature is the animation on the homepage: the title “Who controls the media and information in Greece” tilts left and right according to the cursor’s movement. This detail works symbolically, highlighting the influence that powerful oligarchs exert on the media and, by extension, on shaping public opinion.
The project’s biggest technical challenge was the structure and interactivity of the network. The network is custom-built and dynamic, allowing users to:
Move the nodes and observe how the overall system shifts, reinforcing the idea of interdependence and entanglement.
Zoom in and out to explore in detail the relationships between companies and media outlets.
Apply filters to tailor the information to their needs.
Special emphasis was placed on data management (data entry), as the content had to be organized in a way that kept it easy to read and understand despite its complexity.
