The story behind the site starts from the point where AreWeEurope, a group of Brussels-based journalists, decided to work with the Dutch NGO Dare To Be Grey and analyse the various social issues that concerns the residents of Europe’s border countries. Greece, of course, was one of their most anticipated destinations, as part of the countries that are in the heart of the social crisis in Europe. So, they approached young Greek professionals to form the team that would undertake this project. We were also part of the team that consisted of journalist, photographer, filmmaker, musicians, developer and a local organisation for human rights.

The purpose was within a week to create an informative site that presents the polarization in Greece and how it is gaining ground in Greeks’ daily lives. Instead, the team`s decision was to present a more optimistic and positive perspective, through three stories that divided public opinion but proved that ordinary people can overthrow all this bad energy and begin to make the mood more positive, fair and respectful to the rights of every human being. The common assumption was that society needs more “Filotimo"

FILOTIMO - A WAY OF LIFE

"To the Greek, Filotimo is like breathing.
A Greek is not a Greek without it.
He might as well not be alive."

- Thales of Miletus, pre-Socratic philosopher (624 - 548 B.C.)

It loosely translates to a feeling of altruism, hospitality and mutual respect.
The notion is personal and emotional, and untranslatable into other languages.
But one thing is clear: filotimo is a way of life—one that is currently under serious threat.

Concerning the design, we moved to white and black which indicates the polarization and the contrast, also, we chose Arial as it is a cheap copy of Helvetica, so it matched perfectly the tendency of the Greeks to lower the costs due to the financial crisis, while it is installed on every computer, which automatically makes it a fair, equitable and democratic font. On the homepage, the reader sees the word "filotimo" fragmented to the limits of wear.

Going on, various extreme events pass in front of him, putting him in reality and revealing the magnitude of polarization. But as he goes on through each story separately, gradually realises the problem and getting to the core of it, the solution now seems to be something forgotten, something that is self-evident and must be brought back to the consciousness of the people. Thus, as an ancient drama viewer, he concludes that the solution to all is "FILOTIMO".
